Don't Fall into Fall!

Fall conjures up images of colorful leaves, pumpkins, and, of course, scarecrows!

Challenge your students to help these friendly fellows stand tall. With just some basic supplies (pipe cleaners, craft sticks, plastic utensils, clothespins, and tape), ask students to make their scarecrows stand as tall as possible WITHOUT succumbing to the strong autumn winds (as the kids attempt to blow them down).

This task is tried, true, and totally fun!

Fun With Frank!
Frankenstein's monster, when you really think about, was an (admittedly macabre) STEM project!

When I hand out the supplies for this task, my kids always want to know what's inside the monster's head. Imagine their surprise when I tell them his brain is mushrooms! (I just use mushrooms because I love them and I know they won't go to waste after the lesson, but any small can will do!)
It's the students' job to build a body that will support the monster's head. But building a strong body out of 2 pieces of construction paper and some tape is not easy.

Students will quickly realize that a 2D piece of paper is insufficient for supporting a heavy 3D object...unless the paper also takes on a 3D shape.

This is an engaging, mess-free challenge that students really enjoy. Safety tip: I like to have my students work on the floor for this activity to reduce the risk of falling cans!
