 You don't need snow

to have fun sledding!

For this challenge, teams must design a sled.

  • The objectives (criteria) are to make the sled as fast as possible, and for the sled to safely carry its rider (a beanbag animal) to the base of the hill.

  • The constraints are that students must only use the materials provided, must complete a prototype in 20 minutes, and must NOT tape the rider to the sled.

The materials for the sled include:

  • cardboard from a cereal box,

  • a 6-8" wide piece of waxed paper,

  • a 6-8" wide piece of aluminum foil,

  • 4 wide craft sticks,

  • 6 small craft sticks, and

  • approximately 18" of masking tape.

Any large inclined plane may serve as a hill. I fashioned our  "hill" by taping two parallel yard sticks to the back of a sheet of cardboard. The top edge of the  hill was propped against a chart stand and its bottom edge sat on the carpet.

Which sled was the fastest? Which one traveled the farthest?
